Community Recycling
Recycle - Reduce - Reuse - Re-Purpose
Recycling is the process of collecting, separating, and re-manufacturing or converting used or waste products into new materials. Recycling helps extend the life and usefulness of something that has already served its initial purpose by producing some other product that is usable.
Curbside Recycling - Due to the number of available collection haulers in the Findlay and Hancock County area, the City of Findlay does not currently provide a curbside collection service.
However, if you are interested in subscribing to recycling curbside collection services, please look up waste haulers in your area for more details.
Recycling is also available throughout Hancock County, supported by the Hancock County Solid Waste District, who have contracted with a 3rd party collection hauler to provide this service for residents.
Please review the "Remote Recycling Locations" informational link below for details and map locations.
5 Good Reasons Why Recycling is Important
- Recycling Saves the Environment: Recycling different products will help the environment. For example, we know that paper comes from trees and many trees are being cut down just to produce paper. By recycling paper, we can help lesson the number of trees that are cut down. Products made from raw materials that come from our natural resources should be recycled so that we can help preserve the environment.
- Recycling Saves Energy: It takes less energy to process recycled materials than to process virgin materials. For example, It takes a lot less energy to recycle paper than to create new paper from trees. The energy from transporting virgin materials from the source is also saved. Saving energy also has its own benefits, like decreasing pollution. This creates less stress on our own health and our economy.
- Recycling Helps Mitigate Global Warming and Reduce Pollution: By saving energy in industrial production through recycling, the greenhouse gas emissions from factories and industrial plants are lessened and the use of fuels that emit harmful gasses during production is also minimized. Recycling biodegradable waste (rather than burning it) will contribute to the reduction of air pollution and greenhouse gasses that deplete the ozone layer.
- Recycling Saves Needed Space in Landfills: Not all materials are recyclable. By recycling products that are recyclable, we can lesson the amount of waste materials that are placed into landfills over time and save that space for materials that are not recyclable.
- Recycling Helps You Save Money: Products that are made with recycled content are less expensive than products made from virgin materials. If you live in an area that charges you for your trash removal on a per-bag basis, you can see a significant drop in your trash removal costs by recycling. It is common for residents to lower their trash bills by 50% once they start recycling.
Education
Recycling needs to be a habit, not a chore.
Think of recycling in terms of mowing the yard, folding laundry or cleaning your room; these are not things that we always enjoy doing, but they must be done from time to time to maintain our lifestyles.
Education and repetition is the most effective way to develop good habits. The habits we instill in our children today will benefit the generations of tomorrow. Hancock County Solid Waste District has a coarse specific curriculum relating to the three R's; Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle.
Presentations may be scheduled with the Hancock County Solid Waste District to meet your organization's needs.
For more information, contact 419-424-7210 or email HancockSWMD@co.hancock.oh.us to schedule a presentation.

Remote Recycling Locations
Recycling units are available throughout Hancock County. These Recycling Units are placed on a permanent basis at various locations available 24/7. These containers are Single-Stream Collections, which means no more sorting. Please use all the units properly, which means no contamination (items that are NOT accepted being deposited), no littering or leaving materials outside the unit on the ground and no illegal dumping will be tolerated. These are illegal actions. Most of the sites are video monitored. This may result in the recycling unit being removed and the program being discontinued.
Please recycle responsibly... check out the Household Directory for other local recycling options
PROGRAM CHANGES: 2024 JUNE ACTIVITY
The Hancock County Commissioners and the Hancock County Solid Waste Management District have contracted with a 3rd party service provider, to provide a collection service that will replace the existing units throughout the County. The current 40 yd blue separated recycling unit will be removed and replaced with single stream 8 yd collection bins. These new collection bins do not require residents to separate the materials for donation and will be serviced by the contractor. The Hancock County Solid Waste Management District will still oversee the program, yet we are confident that these units will be serviced timely and regularly by the 3rd-party contractor reducing the onsite debris and contamination. This change in service will be a benefit to our community as well as improve the resident’s ability to recycle more regularly when using the collection bin.
With your continued support, we believe this recycling opportunity will increase the local recycling efforts and protect our environment. Please do not leave your recyclables on the ground in the absence of a collection unit.
